A Fresh Start for Iowa Basketball
Since his appointment in March, Coach McCollum has been on a mission to win over the Iowa fan base and rebuild the team's reputation. And it seems like his efforts are paying off! But here's where it gets controversial: can the players deliver on the promise of a winning season?
"They need to bring that extra fire and determination," McCollum emphasized during the media day. "A little edge never hurts, especially when you're trying to prove yourself."
Last season, Iowa's performance dipped, missing out on the NCAA Tournament for the second year in a row. The team's record in the Big Ten Conference was also a cause for concern, leading to a noticeable decline in attendance at home games.
"The fans are a huge part of our success," McCollum explained. "They want to see a team that fights hard and gives it their all. That's what Iowa basketball is all about."
So, McCollum took it upon himself to connect with the fans, attending I-Club events and even mingling with students at football games. He believes this personal touch is crucial to rebuilding the team's support system.
"The people of Iowa are passionate, and they want to see their team succeed," he said. "By engaging with them, we can create a stronger bond and a more united front."
McCollum's track record speaks for itself. Before joining Iowa, he led Drake to a remarkable 31-win season and an NCAA Tournament appearance. He also boasts an impressive resume from his time at Northwest Missouri State, where he won four NCAA Division II national championships.
However, the challenge at Iowa is unique. McCollum had to almost entirely rebuild the roster, with only one holdover player, sophomore forward Cooper Koch. He brought along six players from Drake, including Bennett Stirtz, the conference player of the year.
"These players will be crucial in implementing my vision and inspiring the new recruits," McCollum said. "They've already set a great example of the effort and toughness required at this level."
And this is the part most people miss: McCollum's experience coaching at different levels has given him a unique perspective. He was surprised to find that the talent gap between Division II and the Missouri Valley Conference wasn't as wide as expected. But he knows the jump to the Big Ten will be a bigger challenge.
"The competition gets tougher, and the players are bigger, more talented, and more athletic," he explained. "It's a whole new ball game, and we need to be ready for it."
Stirtz, who has played for McCollum at all three of his coaching stops, believes the coach's approach remains consistent.
"He's the same coach I've always known, with a few adjustments for the higher level of competition," Stirtz said. "His passion and dedication are what make him so successful."
As a native of Iowa City and a lifelong Hawkeye fan, McCollum understands the significance of the program to the community. His interactions with the fans have left him confident that they're ready to rally behind a winning team.
"The fans are eager to see us succeed," he said. "They want to be a part of the journey, not just the destination. We're building something special here, and we want them to be a part of it every step of the way."
So, will the Iowa Hawkeyes rise to the challenge and deliver a winning season? Only time will tell. But with Coach McCollum at the helm and a passionate fan base behind them, anything is possible.
