In a game that was never really in doubt, the New England Patriots snagged their first win on the 2021 season, defeating the New York Jets 25-6.

Rookie QB Mac Jones was efficient once again; completing 73% of his passes for 186 yards, while the Patriots defense intercepted his counterpart Zach Wilson four times. It wasn’t all sunshine and rainbows; however, as the Patriots defense was once again gashed on the ground to the tune of 152 yards on 31 carries. New Englands offensive line also struggles without their right tackle Trent Brown in the lineup.

Nonetheless, a win is a win in the National Football League, and the Patriots will happily take their 1-1 record back to Foxborough and prepare for the New Orleans Saints.

Yodny Cajuste and J.J. Taylor will make their season debuts this week after being inactive in week one. Taylor will take the place of rookie Rhamondre Stevenson who fumbled in his NFL debut against Miami. Trent Brown and Kyle Van Noy are new inactives, they both missed multiple practices last week.

Wide receiver Keelan Cole will make his Jets debut this week, while former 2nd-round pick Denzel Mims is inactive.

Coin Toss

New England had their choice of the opening coin toss but they chose incorrectly. Matthew Slater called heads and it came up tails. The Jets chose to defer their choice to the second half. New England will start with the ball.

First Quarter

Matt Ammendola sailed the opening kickoff through the back of the end zone, setting Mac Jones and the Patriots up at their own 25-yard line. On the second play from scrimmage, Kendrick Bourne fumbled the ball, but the play was whistled dead due to forward progress being stopped. New England kept the ball and picked up a pair of first downs —thanks to a third-down conversion and a roughing the passer penalty— that moved them to the Jets 36-yard line. A blown up draw play and sack of Jones pulled New England out of field goal territory, forcing them to punt.

Zach Wilson and the Jets offense gave the ball right back, as J.C. Jackson intercepted Wilson on his first pass attempt of the game; setting New England up at the Jets 35-yard line.

After picking up a first down on the ground, the Patriots offense stalled when they went to the air. None of Jones’ attempts went for more than six yards, and an Isaiah Wynn penalty set them up for a third-and-long that they couldn’t convert. They settled for a 46-yard field goal by Nick Folk. Jake Bailey’s ensuing kickoff sailed out of bounds and gave New York the ball at their own 40-yard line. The Jets picked up 13-yards on their first play, crossing over into Patriots territory. On the very next play, Wilson’s second pass attempt was intercepted, this time by Adrian Phillips.

James White picked up 28-yards on a running back screen, moving New England into Jets territory on their first play of the series. After picking up another first down, the Patriots got tricky, running a toss play to White who threw back to Jones who found Jonnu Smith for 19-yards and another first down.

That put the Patriots in the red zone, where they would cash in on a pair of James White runs. [Patriots 10:0 Jets]

The Jets started their following drive with great field position once again, this time due to a 37-yard kick return by former Patriot Braxton Berrios. A pair of runs burned the remaining clock in the first quarter.

Second Quarter

New York started the second quarter with a first-down conversion on third-and-one. Wilson completed his first pass two plays later to a wide open Elijah Moore for 27-yards. The Jets moved into the red zone on a quick hitter to Berrios, and fed their running backs for four straight carries but New Englands defense held. A touchback set New England up at their 25-yard line, before Yasir Durant got beaten off the line for two sacks on three plays. New England goes three-and-out and punts to Berrios, whose return gives New York the ball at their 49-yard line.

New York continued to attack the Patriots on the ground, picking up a 17-yard first down on their first play of the series. Then they went back to the air where Wilson was picked off for the third time overall, and second by J.C. Jackson.

Jones and the Patriots offense took an early shot on the next series to Jakobi Meyers who hauled in a 24-yard pass down the left sideline. New England wasn’t able to add much of anything after that and punted from their 39-yard line.

The Jets started their next series inside their own 20-yard line. A holding penalty on the first play sent them back inside the 10-yard line for a 1st-and-18. That forced Wilson into another passing situation where he was almost picked off again. Instead, Ja’Whaun Bentley tipped the ball away from Jalen Mills and allowed the Jets to punt it away.

New England started their next drive at their own 31-yard line with 2:09 remaining, this time with a new right tackle in Justin Herron. A good opportunity to see Mac Jones run the two-minute drill. Jones completed first down passes to Hunter Henry, Nelson Agholor, and James White to push New England inside the Jet 30-yard line with 0:33 remaining in the half. Jones played it conservative from there, completing a pair of short passes, then being called for an intentional grounding penalty on third down that forced a field goal attempt. Folk was true from 49-yards away, tying the Patriots record for longest made field goals streak at 31. The Jets kneeled to run out the clock and bring us to halftime. [Patriots 13:3 Jets]

Third Quarter

The Jets started the second half with the football at their own 22-yard line. Joejuan Williams got the start for New England’s secondary in place of J.C. Jackson. Following a sequence where both teams swapped penalties, Wilson threw yet another interception. This time is was Devin McCourty who came down with the errant pass.

New England immediately cashed in, with a bully-ball 26-yard touchdown run by Damien Harris. Nick Folk missed the PAT. [Patriots 19:3 Jets]

The Jets started the ensuing drive at their own 10-yard line following a penalty for a block below the waist. Wilson picked up a first down with his legs on a 3rd-and-8 to give New York some breathing room. The Jets played up tempo from there, moving the ball well on the ground and picking up a big chunk of yards on a defensive pass interference called on J.C. Jackson that set them up at the New England 31-yard line. The patriots defense bowed up and sacked Wilson on third-down to force a 53-yard field goal attempt Matt Ammendola. He missed it and the Patriots offense will start with ball at their own 38-yard line.

Mac Jones connected with Hunter Henry for 32-yards, on the first play of the drive moving well into New York territory. A few plays later, Mac Jones threw a block on fell down in front of Shaq Lawson that sprung Kendrick Bourne for 15-yards on an end around. New England stalled out inside the red zone, with Jones only targeting receivers within five yards. Nick Folk came on and knocked through a 32-yard field goal to give him the Patriots franchise record for most made field goals in a row with 32. [Patriots 22:3 Jets]

New York picked up a quick first down before letting the clock run out on the third quarter.

Fourth Quarter

Both teams traded penalties to start the quarter, before the Jets turned the ball over on downs on a great 4th-and-2 pass breakup by Jonathan Jones.

New England took over at their own 47-yard line. Seemingly content to run out as much clock as possible, the Patriots went three-and-out Jake Bailey booted the ball to Braxton Berrios who hauled in a fair catch at the Jets 17-yard line.

On 3rd-and-10 from their own 17, Wilson dropped one into the bucket to Berrios for a gain of 27-yards. The Jets continued to move it well on the ground, picking up 35 more yards to get into the red zone. That’s when they abandoned the run and stalled out. Following a short Devin McCourty kick return, the Patriots offense once again did just about nothing, gaining just one yard on three plays and punting it back to the Jets. Jake Bailey boomed a 59-yarder all the way down to the Jets 20-yard line.

The Jets were forced to play with a sense of urgency down 16 points, and turned it over on downs following a pair of incompletions in the direction of Joejuan Williams. The Patriots took over at the Jets 25-yard line, and kept things on the ground in an effort to put this game out of its misery. They picked up just 12-yards on six runs and were forced to kick a field goal. Nick Folk buried his 33rd straight attempt, this time from 26-yards out. [Patriots 25:6 Jets]

Down 19 points, New York was forced to attack through the air. Though Wilson uncorked a 4th-and-15 completion for 35-yards, a pair of Josh Uche sacks pretty much sealed the game for New England.
