Predator: Badlands Breaks Franchise Records | Box Office Analysis & Movie Review (2025)

Weekend Box Office: Predator: Badlands Smashes Records, While Other Movies Struggle

The weekend box office results are in, and it's been an interesting one! Dan Trachtenberg's 'Predator: Badlands' has proven to be a hit, surpassing expectations and setting a new franchise record. The film grossed an impressive $40 million domestically and an additional $40 million internationally, totaling an astonishing $80 million worldwide debut. This performance surpasses the previous record holder, 'Alien vs. Predator', which opened with $38.2 million. However, when adjusted for inflation, 'Alien vs. Predator' still holds the top spot. 'Predator: Badlands' has the potential to exceed that total, especially with its positive CinemaScore of A-.

This success is a significant win for Disney and 20th Century Studios, especially after the predecessor 'Prey' premiered exclusively on Hulu. The PG-13 rating might have attracted a younger audience, but the real test will come next weekend with the release of 'The Running Man', which carries an R rating. Will it draw a different crowd?

On the other hand, the box office was relatively slow this weekend. 'Regretting You' took the second spot with $7.125 million, a mere 9% drop from last week, which is quite rare for a third weekend. It seems that fans of Colleen Hoover are discovering this film, as it's on track to reach a domestic total of $40 million. 'The Black Phone 2', starring Mason Thames, earned $5.3 million, bringing its total to a strong $70 million. 'Sarah's Oil', an Amazon/MGM biographical drama, performed well with $4.45 million, outperforming other indie releases.

'Nuremberg', a courtroom drama, made $4.14 million, but streaming might be its primary platform. 'Chainsaw Man: The Movie' continued its successful run with $3.8 million, bringing its domestic total to $38 million. Yorgos Lanthimos' 'Bugonia' fell short, earning only $3.5 million and accumulating a disappointing $12 million in total.

Two star-driven indie movies, 'Die My Love' and 'Christy', had disastrous openings. 'Die My Love', starring Jennifer Lawrence and Robert Pattinson, made a meager $2.8 million, despite Mubi's $24 million investment. Its CinemaScore of D+ is a concern. 'Christy', starring Sydney Sweeney, opened outside the top ten with just $1.3 million and a low $649 per-screen average. 'Springsteen: Deliver Me From Nowhere' wrapped up its underwhelming journey with $2.2 million and a $20 million domestic total, losing over 1,000 theaters.

The top ten list is rounded out by 'Tron: Ares', which made $1.8 million for a total of $71.26 million domestically.

Next weekend promises to be exciting with the release of 'The Running Man', 'Now You See Me: Now You Don't', and Osgood Perkins' 'Keeper'. Which film will you be seeing? Share your picks in the comments and let's discuss!
