Scattered severe storms expected this afternoon

Today is a First Alert Weather Alert Day for the risk of scattered severe thunderstorms between 2 p.m. and 7 p.m.

TONIGHT AND IT SOUNDS LIKE IF THAT POTENTIAL SEVERE WEATHER WILL BE OUT OF HERE BY THEN. NEVILLE MILLER. LET’S HOPE SO. KELLY IS A FEW HOURS HERE. WE HAVE TO MONITOR THIS AFTERNOON INTO THE EARLY EVENING. SO BETWEEN ABOUT 2 P.M. AND 7:00 IN THE EVENING, THAT’S GOING TO BE AREA WIDE. THAT TIME FRAME THERE THAT WE REALLY NEED TO MONITOR THE WEATHER. WE HAVE THAT RISK OF SEVERE WEATHER AND IT’S GOING TO BE GREATEST FOR OUR NORTHERN COMMUNITIES. ON THE MISSOURI SIDE, SAINT JOSEPH OVER TOWARDS CHILLICOTHE, TRENTON AND MARYVILLE, WHERE YOU SEE THE RED ON THE MAP. WE STILL HAVE THAT MEDIUM RISK FOR THE METRO AND AREAS SOUTHWARD, AND THEN LESS OF A RISK THE FARTHER WEST THAT YOU LIVE ON THE KANSAS SIDE. AND THE THREATS THAT WE’RE MONITORING FOR YOU STILL, THAT POSSIBILITY. WE STILL HAVE THOSE INGREDIENTS. IF THOSE STORMS CAN FIRE, THEY COULD HAVE WIND GUSTS 70 MILES AN HOUR OR EVEN STRONGER THAN THAT POSSIBLY GOLF BALL SIZE HAIL. AND IF THOSE STORMS ARE SEPARATED OR KIND OF INDIVIDUAL STORMS RATHER THAN A BIG LINE, COULD SEE SOME GOLF BALL SIZED HAIL OR LARGER AND THERE IS THAT POSSIBILITY OF A FEW TORNADOES AGAIN, ESPECIALLY IN THIS AREA IN RED IN NORTHERN PARTS OF MISSOURI, ALONG AND NORTH OF 36 HIGHWAY. SO WE’RE GOING TO BE KEEPING A VERY CLOSE MONITOR OR CLOSE EYE ON RADAR AS WE HEAD THROUGH THE DAY. FOR RIGHT NOW, THOUGH, WE’RE QUIET, IT’S CLOUDY, IT’S HAZY, WE’RE WARM. WE’RE AT 81 DEGREES, HUMIDITY IS ALREADY NEAR 70%. AND LOOK AT THAT SOUTH WIND. IT’S GUSTING UP AT AROUND 30 MILES AN HOUR. NOW LOOKING AT LIVE RADAR, THERE’S NOT MUCH TO SEE. WE’VE GOT THOSE QUIET CONDITIONS AREA WIDE. THERE ARE SOME THUNDERSTORMS OFF TO OUR NORTHWEST ROLLING THROUGH NEBRASKA. AND EVENTUALLY I DO EXPECT TO SEE MORE DEVELOPMENT CLOSER TO OUR AREA OVER THE NEXT SEVERAL HOURS. THE WIND. IT’S STRONG. IF YOU’VE BEEN OUTSIDE, YOU KNOW EXACTLY WHAT I’M TALKING ABOUT. WIND SPEEDS AROUND 20 TO 25 MILES AN HOUR. GUSTS COULD BE UP NEAR 40 MILES AN HOUR HEADING THROUGH THE AFTERNOON. OUR TEMPERATURES, EVEN WITH THE CLOUDS, ARE NEAR 80 DEGREES, SO IT’S WARM. IT’S WINDY, IT’S HUMID. WE’RE SEEING THOSE INGREDIENTS COMING TOGETHER. IF STORMS CAN FIRE FOR THOSE STORMS TO TURN SEVERE. SO LOOKING AT YOUR FORECAST FOR TODAY, THE HOURS YOU SEE HERE IN RED TWO, FOUR AND 6 P.M., THAT’S ME OF THAT SEVERE WEATHER RISK. THAT’S THE ALERT PART OF YOUR FORECAST. BUT LATER ON THIS EVENING WE’RE GOING TO BE QUIET. ONCE THOSE STORMS ROLL ON THROUGH, WE’LL START TO COOL BACK DOWN. LOW 70S AT EIGHT, MIDDLE 60S BY 10:00 THIS EVENING, LET’S NOW GO THROUGH THAT TIMELINE HERE, TAKING YOU THROUGH THE REST OF TODAY. SO AGAIN, LUNCHTIME, IF YOU’RE GOING TO HAVE LUNCH HERE NOW, BETWEEN NOW AND TWO, WE’RE GENERALLY LOOKING OKAY. BUT WATCH AS WE HEAD TOWARDS 3:00. HOW QUICKLY THOSE STORMS START TO GO UP. LATEST RUNS OF FUTURESCAN HAVE BEEN PICKING UP ON THIS TREND. HERE’S A LOOK AT 3:00 PM. SO I MENTIONED IT A FEW MINUTES AGO. MAKE SURE THAT YOU HAVE MULTIPLE WAYS TO RECEIVE ALERTS BECAUSE AGAIN, THESE STORMS, ONCE YOU GET GOING, COULD INTENSIFY PRETTY QUICKLY. HERE THERE’S THREE HEADING TOWARDS 5 P.M. NOTICE THAT THEY’RE EAST OF THE METRO. SO AT THIS POINT IN THE METRO WOULD BE OUT OF THE WOODS. HOWEVER, WARRENSBURG CLINTON SEDALIA MARSHALL UP TOWARDS CHILLICOTHE 5 P.M. YOU COULD STILL BE DEALING WITH THUNDERSTORMS AND THEN BY SEVEN, THOSE STORMS PUSH OFF TO THE EAST INTO CENTRAL MISSOURI. AND THEN WE GET THAT QUIETER WEATHER FOR LATER ON TONIGHT. SO THAT’S WE’RE MONITORING FOR YOU ALL PART OF THIS ALERT DAY. SO AGAIN, THIS AFTERNOON TO THE EARLY EVENING SCATTERED SEVERE THUNDERSTORMS, 2 TO 7 P.M. THAT’S THE TIME FRAME. DAMAGING WIND, LARGE HAIL, A FEW TORNADOES ARE ALL POSSIBLE. SO MAKE SURE THAT YOU’RE STAYING EXTRA VIGILANT TODAY. WE CERTAINLY WILL BE. WE’RE GOING TO KEEP YOU UPDATED ON THE WEATHER. 74 TOMORROW. SO A LOT QUIETER. 80 ON THURSDAY. STORM CHANCES ARE BACK JUST IN TIME. IT SEEMS LIKE IT ALWAYS WORKS OUT THIS WAY FOR MEMORIAL DAY
