From the dozens of retailers selling maternity clothes, only a handful offer truly good options for plus-sized bodies. According to stylist Alicia Lloyd, the best plus-size maternity clothes are more than just large versions of regular offerings. “Plus-size clothing is cut differently to flatter a woman’s figure and is created specifically for the plus-size body,” she says.
We set out to find the best places to buy plus-size maternity clothes because we believe everyone deserves to feel comfortable, supported, and confident during pregnancy and beyond. With input from stylists, parents, and pregnant people, we researched dozens of brands and retailers to evaluate their plus-size maternity wear offerings for different needs, including clothes for work, comfy looks, bras, jeans, leggings, swimwear, baby shower dresses, and options for all occasions.

Why We Like It
Unlike other retailers, Old Navy has the option to search for maternity clothes based on trimester—you can browse for first-, second-, and third-trimester choices as well as options for the fourth trimester (postpartum). You’ll find a wide selection of everything you might need, including tops, jeans, pants, dresses, shorts, pajamas, loungewear, and more. Old Navy even offers bras, underwear, and exercise clothes to help you stay active through your pregnancy.
Shoppers especially love Old Navy's selection of maternity jeans, which have real pockets, unlike a lot of other maternity brands that have fake pockets only. Don't forget to keep your eyes peeled for Old Navy's "hot deals" while you’re browsing, which can help you score additional discounts on already budget-friendly picks.

Old Navy doesn’t have an explicit plus-size maternity category for expecting parents, but it does carry sizes up to 20.

:max_bytes(150000):strip_icc()/mommy-style-maternity-gown-fbf272a846f84c698e30855c01cf10e4.jpg)
Why We Like It
If you’re in the market for a no-frills, budget-friendly option for maternity clothes, then you’ll want to head on to Walmart. The brand’s online maternity plus section curates more than 19,000 items with prices starting at $6. You’ll find name brands like Motherhood Maternity, Momcozy, and Oh! Mama Maternity, and all the items can be picked up in-store or curbside free of charge or delivered via two-day shipping through UPS or FedEx.
But Take Note
Although Walmart is a great place to buy plus-size maternity clothes, locating them online can be a bit tricky. First, you’ll need to click on Maternity (under Women’s Clothing) and choose a category, then you’ll select “Maternity Plus” under “Clothing Size Group” on the left-side menu. Also, you may find non-maternity clothes scattered throughout while you browse, so you’ll want to keep an eye out to make sure there’s no confusion.
The Details:
- Sizes Available: 2XL to 3XL
- Shipping Options: Two-day shipping through UPS or FedEx. Orders of $35 or more ship free.
- Return Policy: You have 90 days after purchase to exchange or return an item. You can return items in-store, by mail, or via a scheduled pickup from your home. An in-store receipt or Walmart.com order number must accompany the return to receive a full refund.
Best Work Clothes: Nordstrom
Why We Like It
Although Nordstrom doesn’t have a specific plus-size maternity section, you can shop its maternity collection and narrow it down by size to reveal hundreds of plus-size items (up to 4X). You’ll find a variety of essential work attire, including trousers, button-up shirts, skirts, dresses, sweaters, and more.
When it comes to shipping and returns, Nordstrom’s goal is to “make customers happy.” When shopping on Nordstrom’s website, most items ship free regardless of how much money you spend, and returns are almost always accepted (though they are analyzed on a case-by-case basis).
But Take Note
Compared to other retailers, Nordstrom might be a bit pricier, but you’ll always find deals and high-quality items.
The Details:
- Sizes Available: XL to 4X
- Shipping Options: Almost everything on Nordstrom’s website ships free, regardless of its price. Expedited shipping is available for an extra fee, and items can always be picked up free of charge at your local Nordstrom store.
- Return Policy: Returns are always free (via prepaid shipping labels or in-store). Refunds are given to the tender with which returned items were purchased.

Why We Like It
Stitch Fix gives parents-to-be the opportunity to experience a personal stylist from the comfort of their own home. After taking a short quiz to determine your style, budget, and size, a stylist will send you a hand-picked box of clothing along with guidance on how to wear each piece. You'll then have the option to purchase the clothing or send it back via the included prepaid shipping envelope. You can also choose to shop "Freestyle" from the site, without the help of a stylist.
Over time, your stylist will work with you to determine your preferences, but there is no obligation to buy anything. Best of all, Stitch Fix partners with more than 1,000 brands, so you have access to the most varieties of plus-size maternity clothing available.
But Take Note
If you don't purchase at least one item from your Fix, you'll be charged a $20 stylist fee upon returning the clothing.
The Details:
- Sizes Available: 14W to 24W and 1X to 3X
- Shipping Options: Free shipping
- Return Policy: Free returns on all items purchased, including items you’re trying on from your latest delivery and items purchased individually. Every shipment comes with a prepaid return envelope to send back unwanted items. There's a $20 charge if you don't buy at least one item from your box.

Why We Like It

Target also has maternity shapewear, which can be especially helpful under work attire or for more formal occasions.

The Details:
- Sizes Available: 1X to 3X
- Shipping Options: Target offers free in-store or curbside pickup on all orders and same-day delivery is available through a Shipt membership or a $9.99 fee. You can also choose free two-day shipping when you spend $35 or more or use your Target RedCard.

Why We Like It
We’ve tested many Kindred Bravely pieces across different categories and the brand always stands out thanks to its high quality and great fit. Considering it’s one of our favorite picks for maternity underwear, maternity pajamas, and postpartum underwear, we weren’t surprised it also offers the most amazingly comfortable plus-size maternity swimsuits.
Whether you’re looking for a one-piece, bikini, tankini, or swim shorts, you’ll find a style to make you feel cute and comfortable. We especially appreciate the crossover style options that can also be used for nursing.
But Take Note
We had a really hard time finding cute plus-size maternity swimsuits and landed on Kindred Bravely because of its many flattering styles, but we wish the brand offered options beyond size 1X.
The Details:
- Sizes Available: XL to 1X
- Shipping Options: Free standard shipping on orders over $75. Shipping charges for orders under $75 start at $7.
- Return Policy: Items purchased at kindredbravely.com can be returned within 30 days. Final sale items (including undergarments and swimsuits) cannot be returned or exchanged.

Why We Like It
Storq’s collection focuses on loungewear staples that can be mixed, matched, and worn from pregnancy to postpartum and beyond. You’ll find everything from three-piece sets and sweatshirts to sweatpants and leggings. Since loungewear is meant to be comfortable, Storq only sources fabrics that are breathable, soft, and stretchy. Eco-friendly material is used whenever possible and items are designed to drape and recover well to provide long-lasting style.
We also love Storq’s Easy Button-Up shirts and Classic Pencil skirts, which create a great basic outfit to wear to work.
But Take Note
The collection at Storq is more limited compared to other retailers like Old Navy and Target. There's also not a specific plus-sized maternity collection, but each clothing piece goes up to 4X.
The Details:
- Sizes Available: XL to 4X
- Shipping Options: For domestic orders under $75, Storq offers no-rush shipping for $6.95 and priority shipping for $11.95. For domestic orders over $75, there is free no-rush shipping and $5 priority shipping.

Best Leggings: Torrid
:max_bytes(150000):strip_icc()/torrid-maternity-leggings-6d76547c8b9f4bcca65c62ce814c7cee.jpg)
Why We Like It
We couldn’t leave Torrid off our plus-size maternity clothing list. We tested the brand’s leggings and were pleased by how stretchy and supportive they felt. In fact, our tester said she lived in these leggings the entire last month of her pregnancy!
The cotton-spandex blend is designed for comfort, which our tester confirmed as she exercised, ran errands, lounged, and played with her toddler. She especially appreciated the over-the-belly style that stayed in place all day.
But Take Note
These leggings aren’t designed for strenuous exercise, as they offer little compression. During testing, we also noticed that the color dulled a little.
The Details:
- Sizes Available: 10 to 30
- Shipping Options: Torrid offers a $6 flat rate for standard shipping on all orders. Express and overnight shipping are also available.
- Return Policy: Items can be returned within 60 days of the purchase date on your receipt. A $6 return shipping fee will be deducted from the total amount.
Best for Outerwear: Mountain Warehouse
:max_bytes(150000):strip_icc()/mountain-warehouse-maternity-rainforest-jacket-c07ca32bf8894b509e70f52a64a0a3c3.jpg)
Why We Like It
Mountain Warehouse has a maternity collection that can be filtered for plus sizes. Depending on the type of weather you’re shopping for, you can choose from lightweight sweatshirts and waterproof jackets to warm fleece hoodies and heavyweight parkas. In addition to outerwear, you can also buy everything you need to brave the outdoors with your bump, including footwear, snow apparel, and camping and hiking equipment.
But Take Note
Although all Mountain Warehouse styles are very comfortable and will definitely keep you warm, they’re not very dressy—you won’t find a more formal coat to wear to work or special occasions.
The Details:
- Sizes Available: 1X to 2X
- Shipping Options: Standard shipping is $10 or free on orders of $75 or more. Express shipping is $20. Mountain Warehouse does not ship to Alaska or Hawaii.
- Return Policy: Returns can be sent via USPS and must be done within 60 days of purchase for a refund. Items must be unworn, in the original packaging, and with tags attached.
Best for Jeans: 1822 Denim
:max_bytes(150000):strip_icc()/1822-denim-maternity-jeans-f7929c9f8924436eb0bd0d44a53ba230.jpg)
Why We Like It
While we fully support wearing whatever makes you comfortable during your pregnancy, some people may prefer the more structured look of jeans. We tested a pair of jeans from 1822 Denim and felt they were the best over-the-belly pair of maternity jeans and were reasonably priced compared to other brands.
But Take Note
Although we love this pair of jeans, the options for plus-size clothes at 1822 Denim are limited. We also recommend you look at larger brands like Old Navy, which offers a variety of affordable styles.
The Details:
- Sizes Available: 14W to 24W
- Shipping Options: Shipping is $9.99 for orders under $100; Free shipping on orders over $100.
- Return Policy: Accepted up to 30 days from the date the order is placed on items in original, sellable condition with no signs of wear/damage and all original tags attached.
Best for Bras: Cake Maternity
:max_bytes(150000):strip_icc()/cake-maternity-ribbon-candy-nursing-bra-f697ea0ef5cb4a538c7770fc4ea97662.jpg)
Why We Like It
Cake Maternity is an award-winning brand that specializes in maternity and nursing bras and undergarments that are stylish and functional, offering sizes 6 to 20 or an A to JJ cup.
Another great feature of Cake Maternity is that its founders are committed to sustainability. In addition to all products being Oeko-Tex 100 Certified, its warehouse is run completely by solar power, and it has eliminated single-use plastics from its business. It also uses recycled packaging and repurposes its extra fabrics whenever possible.
But Take Note
Bras are expensive in general, but a single bra from Cake Maternity can cost you upwards of $80. You deserve any luxury that makes you more comfortable during your pregnancy, but discount retailers like Walmart and Old Navy also carry plus-size maternity bra options that may fit your budget better.
The Details:
- Sizes Available: 18 to 20 and A-JJ cup
- Shipping Options: Shipping on orders under $75 is $15; Free shipping on orders of $75 or more.
- Return Policy: You have 45 days from purchase to return your item(s), and it must be in its original unworn condition, with garment tags, hygiene stickers, and labels in place. “Last Chance” items (unless deemed faulty) aren’t eligible for a refund.
Our Review Process and Experts
To complete our list of the best places to buy plus-size maternity clothes, we spoke to three fashion experts who are knowledgeable about shopping for different body types and what to prioritize in plus-size clothes.
- Alicia Lloyd, styling supervisor at Stitch Fix.
- Melysa Santye, senior buyer at Z Supply
- Leena Alsulaiman, style coach, creative strategist, and stylist for Anthropologie
With their expert insights in mind, we researched dozens of retailers and maternity clothing lines to find options that offer stylish and affordable plus-size maternity clothes. We narrowed our list down based on value, quality, fit, materials, sizing, shipping options, and return policies. We also tested many of the garments included in this article. Be sure to check out our pregnancy and postpartum section for tips and recommendations for the best maternity wardrobe.
Factors to Consider When Shopping for Plus-Size Maternity Clothes
- Style: The most flattering maternity styles are always the ones you feel most confident in. Alsulaiman adds that tunic tops and empire dresses are popular maternity styles because they provide ample room for movement while remaining comfortable and stylish. Many retailers, such as PinkBlush Maternity and Storq, offer trendy, fashion-forward, and stylish plus-size maternity clothes, so letting the brand lead your pregnancy style is also a legitimate option. (And hey, you have enough on your mind these days anyway!)
- Fit: In terms of fit, Lloyd says the difference between plus and straight-size clothing goes beyond numbers. She says plus-size clothing is cut differently to flatter the figure, and they’re made specifically for plus-size bodies. For plus-size maternity clothing, Santye suggests looking for fabrics that stretch, like 3% or more Spandex or elastane for more versatility. She also recommends avoiding synthetic fabrics, especially during the summer, and opting for more breathable fabrics like 100% cotton, silk, or Tencel.
- Quality: Well-made maternity clothes can be more comfortable and durable during pregnancy, fit better, and be more flattering. In addition to choosing a trusted brand, utilizing reviews and customer photos can help you evaluate an item's quality before purchasing.
When Should I Start Wearing Maternity Clothes?
The best time to start wearing maternity clothes during your pregnancy is whenever you feel it's most comfortable. Every pregnancy and person is different, and some may choose to don maternity clothes early in the first trimester, while others may prefer to wait until the second or third. Some people may choose to skip wearing maternity clothes and stick to their regular options, although for people with a prominent bump, that may be a little trickier.
How Do I Know What Size Maternity Clothes to Buy?
In general, your maternity size will be the same as your pre-pregnancy size, but it all depends on the brand. Some retailers offer size charts that give suggestions based on your body measurements, which can be helpful as your belly grows. “You want clothes that will make you feel comfortable, supported, and confident throughout your pregnancy,” says Alsulaiman.
What Basic Items Should My Maternity Wardrobe Include?
Santye recommends an oversized T-shirt or sweatshirt when out running errands and a bodycon dress that accentuates your body for a night out with friends. She also suggests a duster cardigan because it's meant to be worn open and slightly oversized, so it'll grow with you.
Alsulaiman adds that one of the most popular maternity styles is the wrap dress. “These dresses are not only incredibly comfortable but also super versatile,” she says. “You can dress them up with heels and statement jewelry for a night out or keep things casual with flats and a denim jacket for running errands.”
We also recommend owning at least one good pair of maternity jeans and leggings that you feel comfortable wearing, as well as a bra, as your breasts tend to significantly increase in size during pregnancy.
Will Non-Maternity Items Fit Me During Pregnancy?
You may find that your pre-pregnancy clothes still fit you, but every person and pregnancy is unique. You may be able to choose non-maternity clothing options like flowy tops, stretchy dresses, and oversized sweaters that will accommodate your baby bump, especially in the first two trimesters. Some people may prefer maternity items later on in the third trimester or if they have a larger bump.
