RIDING HIGH: Cal Poly opened the Big West Championships at home last weekend with the multi-event portion of the conference meet, and senior Nick Gammal and freshman Isaac Knapp helped the Mustangs get off to a solid start. Gammal and Knapp finished seventh and eighth respectively in the decathlon to score 3 team points, allowing the Cal Poly men to sit in fifth place entering this week's action. No women competed in the multi-event portion of the meet for the Mustangs. While the Big West Multi-Event Championships were wrapping this past Saturday at the Miller & Capriotti Athletics Complex, some of Cal Poly's top distance runners were busy shredding the school record books at the Oxy Invitational in Los Angeles. Graduate student Davis Bove (No. 2), junior Spencer Pickren (No. 8), sophom*ore Lewis Westwood (No. 9) and freshman Chris Caudillo (No. 6) all ran top-10 marks in program history in the men's 1,500-meter, while sophom*ore Carson Smith posted the sixth-fastest time in school history in the men's 800 and senior Quinton Alexander improved upon his ninth-best time in program history in the 800. Bove's performance allowed him to secure the season's final Big West Men's Track Athlete of the Week award.

INDIVIDUAL TITLE CONTENDERS: Entering the Big West Championships, 20 Mustangs own top-three marks recorded in the conference this season including eight who have the top mark in their respective event — Shelby Daniele (women's 200), Davis Bove (men's 1,500, 5,000), Tatiana Cornejo (women's 1,500), Colton Swinth (men's 10,000), Bryce Kueker (men's 3,000 steeplechase), Lexi Evans (women's pole vault) and Noah Bustos (men's long jump). Bove is seeded as the favorite in both the men's 1,500 and 5,000 entering the meet, and won the Big West individual cross country title this past fall. Bove is one of 13 entries for Cal Poly in the men's 5,000. Daniele is tied for No. 2 in school history in the women's 100 and is No. 3 in the 200, and last year she placed second in the 200 and fourth in the 100 at the conference championships. Cornejo currently owns the top time in the Big West in the 1,500 and is third in the 800. Evans cleared 13 feet, 9.75 inches in the pole vault earlier this season, the second best mark in school history, and finished runner-up in the event at last year's conference meet. Swinth, who won the men's 10,000 Big West title in 2023, is Cal Poly's only defending individual conference champion slated to compete in this weekend's meet.

TROPHY CHASE: The Mustang men will be seeking their first Big West title in program history this weekend, while the women are searching for their second (2021). Last year, the Cal Poly women placed second as a team at conference and the men took third. In 2023, five Mustangs won Big West titles and a total of 15 individuals and two relays secured All-Big West honors by placing in the top three in their respective events.

#EVENTSQUAD: Based on the latest USTFCCCA #EventSquad rankings released Tuesday, Cal Poly will carry five top-25 nationally-ranked event groups into the Big West Championships: No. 10 men's javelin, No. 12 men's hammer throw, No. 13 men's 1,500, No. 19 women's pole vault and No. 25 women's high jump.

UP NEXT: Following the conference meet, the Mustangs will wait to learn which athletes have qualified for the NCAA West Preliminaries hosted by the University of Arkansas on May 22-25 in Fayetteville. The field is comprised of the top 48 individual marks and top 24 relay times in the West Region.
